Design Systems and Operations
“Design Ops” means different things to different people in different organizations.
My focus in design operations stems from my deep drive to optimize and expand our design team’s tools, asset pipeline and methodologies in an effort make our own processes efficient and consistent.
Properly building and documenting components, properties and variations within Figma lifts all boats even if the team or org doesn’t have a properly federated design system. In this pursuit I’m in the library 30 minutes after every feature release, refactoring all the little atoms to bring them up to compliance.
Right now I’m managing one and a half design systems with around 150 components each - bringing in fellow designers, stakeholders, developers and marketing in as needed to make sure the present is in order while always looking towards the future.
Currently Managing:
~230 Components
~250 Styles
5 Active Libraries
Another aspect I love working on is creating templates and facilitating design sprints with both designers and non designers alike. I find tools like Miro invaluable for creating a semi turn-key solution that can evolve to fit the product, team and scope. I really value the ability of my teammates to remix and run with artifacts like these to create service blueprints, journey maps and whatever other flavor of the year framework is out there!
